Another Sunday, another day spent cooking myself silly. Today there was a bit of a twist, though. While I was in my real kitchen making real food, I was also cooking like mad in a digital kitchen playing with Bakery Story, a highly addictive Farmville-style game that my daughter invited me to play with her.
I not-so-secretly yearn to run a bakery/cafe of my own someday. If Bakery Story is any indication, I shouldn’t quit my day job. I have run out of everything, and my customers have been storming out angry for several hours now while I wait for the cupcakes, lattes, and espresso to finish. (The fact that it takes several hours to make some espresso, though, indicates that this game is not a good simulation of reality!)
Thankfully my real kitchen runs a little bit better, and this week I had fun making use of treasures bought at our newly opened Trader Joe’s, from whence came the dried blueberries in today’s whole wheat soda bread. The whole family enjoyed our shopping trip there, and I think it may be the start of a beautiful friendship, especially if they keep those sea salt and turbinado sugar dark chocolate almonds in stock.
I can’t say the same for Bakery Story, though. My life is complicated enough without adding in the need to properly time my fake croissants to keep the imaginary digital mob happy, which is what my poor daughter is putting herself through. Games should be fun; they should not feel like having a job!
So here’s what came out of my kitchen today:
- 2 pounds of Italian baked tofu
- 2 pounds of spicy Asian baked tofu
- a triple batch of Seitan O Greatness
- scrambled tofu with vegan sausage, asparagus, and grape tomatoes
- whole wheat blueberry soda bread
- homemade peanut butter
- brown rice
- chickpea and spinach curry
- broccoli slaw with miso cashew dressing
