Ship’s Log–July 2nd


Today Thing 1 and I ran a fast three miles early in the morning, which in the humidity felt like a lot more. I sure wish this horrible weather system would move out, because right now it feels like we live in the tropics. Despite the heat, though, Thing 1 and I were able to run the whole thing at less than 9 minute a mile…an amazing pace for us.

My eating fell apart completely in the afternoon. I was so hungry and ate like a bottomless pit, which, incidentally, I am not. Then at dinner I had seconds, which I rarely do now except the night before long runs. In essence, today I ate four big meals, but only worked out for 26 minutes. That’s not something I can let become habit.


  • Blueberries, strawberries, and bananas with vanilla almond granola, ground flax seed, and unsweetened soy milk.
  • Coffee with stevia


  • Whole wheat wrap with tempeh salad, avocado, kale, romaine, and sriracha
  • Cole slaw
  • Grapes
  • Coffee with cardamom, vanilla stevia, and unsweetened soy milk
  • Square of 83% dark chocolate

Afternoon Snacks:

  • Hummus and carrots
  • Popcorn with olive oil, salt and Fauxmesan
  • Brownie bites
  • Small dish of slaw
  • Iced tea made with black tea and mint from the garden


  • Steamed baby bok choy, broccoli, red pepper, shiitake, scallions, and tofu tossed with a tahini almond orange sauce
  • Brown rice
  • Glass of Cabernet
  • Brownie bites
