Ship’s Log–July 7th

Thing 1 woke me up at 5:30 am, with new that her stomach hurt so much she hadn’t been able to sleep since 4. Her fever was down below 100, but her belly hurt. Hunger, perhaps? I fed her a ripe banana, and the pain subsided. We had been scheduled for a 12 mile training run this morning, but it was clear that she was not up to it. Once the pain in her belly subsided, we talked it over and agreed that I should to a shorter run on my own. We will aim for doing the 12 miler in a day or two, once she has fully recovered. Perhaps in a day or two it will not be so beastly hot and humid, as well. At 5:30 am, it was already 77 degrees.

I headed out at 6:30 for a 6 mile run, and it was one of the most miserable I have done. My pace was over 10 minutes a mile, which is much slower than I would usually run that distance. I hope it was just the heat and humidity, and not Thing 1’s virus, slowing me down.

The rest of the afternoon was spent watching her fever spike and sweat out over and over again. Poor thing is really miserable when the fever get up over 103, which it did twice today before she crawled into bed at 7:30. I hope she wakes up tomorrow feeling better.

Run Fuel & Recovery:

  • Pre-run: coffee with stevia, two brownie bites
  • Post-run: big glass of coconut water.

Breakfast:

  • Blueberry oat muffin from a recipe on Vegan Yumminess, though I used coconut milk in place of the almond milk
  • Smoothie with frozen bananas, coffee, almonds, unsweetened soy milk, and Vega Sport Vanilla Performance Protein.

Lunch:

  • Personal pizza on pre-made crust with Daiya cheese, vegan sausage, and vegan pepperoni
  • Romaine, red leaf lettuce, and kale topped with Sicilian white balsamic and Fauxmesan
  • Watermelon juice
  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with soy milk
  • Marshmallows and dark chocolate

Afternoon Snack:

  • Journey Bar, pizza marinara flavor. I picked up a sample box of these savory bars to try, and it was tasty, if a bit strange in texture.
  • Iced green, peppermint, ginger tea

Dinner:

  • Slice of homemade sausage flavored seitan loaf
  • 1 ear of corn on the cob with Miso Mayo
  • Red leaf lettuce, romaine, and kale with grape tomatoes and cucumber in a homemade pineapple ginger tahini dressing
  • Marshmallows and dark chocolate
  • Glass of merlot

Late:

  • Small dish of granola with chocolate chips
