Ship’s Log–July 11th

Thing 1 showed signs of improvement this morning. She had a bit more pep and personality and a much lower temperature. I hope this continues and that by tomorrow she’s capable of at least a walk in the park, if not a short run. It had been hard having my training buddy laid low for so long, and I am worried that the extended break will make the half marathon much harder for her.

In the meantime, I am desperate to prevent anyone else from catching what she has for fear that it will impact our travel plans next week. My twice daily iced tea is designed in part to boost my own immune system. To make my daily pot, I place two green tea bags, two heaping teaspoons of loose peppermint tea, and about an inch of minced ginger root in a French press and steep in 30 ounces of hot water for about an hour, then press and pour over ice. I have noticed that this tea also has the benefit of helping reduce any water retention, so I also drink it when I’m feeling bloated. So…I’ve been drinking it a lot this past month!

My work out today was two back to back classes at the dojo: a Brazilian Jujitsu class, followed by MMA, for a total of an hour and a half. The BJJ classes this week have been different. My usual partner is Thing 1, and since she’s been sick, I’ve been working with other partners, including a blue belt. Rolling against someone who intimidates me forced me to roll a lot harder than I usually do when I’m rolling against my own child, and I learned that I’m a wee bit more capable than I thought I was. I am also now sporting some pretty impressive bruises, or Fight Tattoos as we like to call them.

One last thing…my gosh but I’m chatty today! I realized this week that though my closet is stuffed with some pretty cool clothing, what I actually wear, unless I have a work meeting of some sort, consists of a handful of ratty T-shirts and jeans or ratty shorts. This is a hazard of working from home, and I fear I am one step away from spending whole days in my jammies. To correct that, I am going to attach photos of myself here more than just once a week, with the thought that if you folks are going to see me, I might make a little more effort. Today I asked Thing 1’s help to put together an outfit complete with accessories, and the result is below. That wonderful belt…she helped me pick it out last fall, and this is the first time I’ve worn it!

Breakfast:

  • Smoothie: banana, strawberries, frozen raspberries, red leaf lettuce, romaine, kale, flax and chia seed, Vega Sport Performance Protein in vanilla (I wanted to add a non-soy protein, to avoid overdoing the soy today), and water.
  • Quesadilla made with a sprouted grain tortilla and leftover tofu scramble from yesterday topped with a bit or sriracha
  • 1/2 of a very small grapefruit
  • Coffee with stevia

Morning Snack:

  • Iced peppermint, ginger, green tea

Lunch:

  • Salad with mixed spring greens, baby kale, cucumber, grape tomatoes, red onion, and homemade tempeh bacon with blackberry ginger balsamic and Fauxmesan
  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with unsweetened soy milk and vanilla stevia
  • Square of 88% dark chocolate

Afternoon Snack:

  • Apple with almond butter “caramel”
  • Iced peppermint, ginger, green tea
  • Pre-class: Journey Bar, Coconut Curry flavor

Dinner:

  • Black bean patties topped with salsa and sriracha
  • Broccoli slaw tossed with pineapple ginger tahini dressing
  • Sweet potato with a little Earth Balance spread and Fauxmesan
  • 1/3 glass of Merlot with seltzer
  • Small dish of granola with chocolate chips
