Ship’s Log–July 16th


The theme of today was pre-travel stress. I rose early, and instead of a morning run I went to have my doctor listen to my lungs. The good news is that I don’t have bronchitis. The bad news, is that I don’t have bronchitis YET, but she could hear some wheezing in there with my dry cough so it is just starting up. Good thing I started the antibiotics yesterday. She also suggested that I take it easy and rest up until the race Sunday, which means no MMA class for me today and in all likelihood, no more training runs.

The rest of the day was spent in a flurry of work, errands, and packing. The Hub and I went out and picked up carry on bags, which we didn’t actually own, and have challenged ourselves and the kids to pack for the trip using only the new carry ons and our designated personal item. This size limit will hopefully curb my tendency to over-pack (I would bring the entire closet and bathroom as well as half the kitchen with me if I could carry it), and I think I am going to manage fitting 6 days worth of clothing plus my running gear in just one small bag, a miracle that is made possible by the fact that it is the height of summer, so no jeans or sweaters need to come along.

With all the hustle and bustle and anxiety over flying (I hate flying), my stress levels were fairly high. This resulted in a bit too much snacking, both in the afternoon and again after dinner. I ate more hummus that I care to admit, but at least it was hummus and not corn chips–Thing 2 and the friend he had over helped me out by eating the house clean of the corn chips before I even made my way to the kitchen. And I ate a lot of good, soothing dark chocolate, which is about the only thing that can take my mind off the fact that tomorrow my precious family and I will be herded into an uncomfortable tin can and hurled through the sky to a ridiculous speed, at the end of which I will happily get to see my sister!


  • Smoothie: Banana, blueberries, frozen mango, romaine, flax and chia seed, unsweetened soy milk and water
  • Whole wheat blueberry oatmeal muffin. (well, ok, muffins)
  • Coffee with stevia

Morning Snacks:

  • Small cup of moka pot coffee with a drop of chocolate stevia
  • Iced peppermint, ginger, green tea


  • The last of the leftover black bean and corn soup with avocado and sriracha
  • Red leaf lettuce and baby kale with tangerine balsamic
  • Blue corn tortilla
  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with unsweetened soy milk and vanilla stevia
  • Orange infused dark chocolate.

Afternoon Snack:

  • Iced peppermint, ginger, green tea
  • Hummus with carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli
  • Hummus on Wasa crackers
  • Too much dark chocolate


  • Field Roast Grain Meat Co. Italian Sausage sauteed with garlic, red onion, grape tomatoes, baby kale, and spinach, and served over a bed of quinoa with Fauxmesan and sriracha
  • Debated having a beer, but sent for a cranberry lime seltzer instead
  • More Wasa crackers with hummus and dark chocolate
