Ship’s Log–July 22nd

Today was the last day of eating crap for a very long while, and since it was an air travel day, the crap was really horrible. Breakfast, at least, wasn’t too bad. I had another egg white omelette at The Local, which was a little greasy perhaps, but nothing compared to the greasy airport pizza we had for lunch. This pizza was the last thing I wanted to eat, but I had let Thing 2 pick lunch. His principal had called while we were en route to Midway Airport to tell us that his teacher from this past year had died last night, and Thing 2, who had bonded with this teacher, was crushed. So when he asked to get a pizza for the family for lunch, I acquiesced.

Our flight was a challenge. I had forgotten to check in yesterday, and by this morning there weren’t enough boarding passes left for our entire family because the flight has been overbooked. When did we reach a point where buying a ticket only gives you the right to compete for a seat on the plane rather than the right to a seat on the plane? We headed to the airport an hour early and were able to grab one of a few boarding passes that had not been available for online check in, so The Hub did not have to come home three hours after the rest of us. Then the news came that our flight was delayed for an hour, which caused my stress levels to skyrocket. I had a hearing tonight back in New Jersey that I needed to make, and any delay made it harder to get there. We took off an hour late, got caught in a holding pattern for a little while, and then, after landing, had a hard time finding the driver who was taking us home from the airport. With hindsight, I suppose I should just be happy that Southwest managed to land my family’s plane safely, but I had lost almost two hours. At home, Thing 2 finally let his grief out over the news about his teacher, and I stayed to comfort him. I made it to my hearing, but with only about 3 minutes to spare before my client’s application was called.

By the time I got home, I needed a beer to even begin to relax from the ordeal that today had turned out to be. I am looking forward to getting back to my normal eating tomorrow, and detoxing from my traveling cheat week.

Breakfast:

  • Coffee with sugar
  • Egg white omelette with spinach, feta, and mushrooms with Tabasco sauce
  • Hash brown patty with ketchup
  • A taste of the kids’ waffles and pancakes
  • Whole wheat toast with butter and jelly

Morning Snack:

  • Two tiny sugar cookies from an Italian bakery near our hotel

Lunch:

  • Food court pizza
  • Food court side salad with Italian dressing
  • Iced tea
  • Iced coffee with soy milk

Afternoon Snack:

  • Godiva mint dark chocolate pearls
  • Airplane pretzels and peanuts

Dinner:

  • Tempeh avocado wrap from Dean’s Natural Market with sriracha

Last Night:

  • Wasa crackers with hummus
  • Small piece of orange dark chocolate
  • Saranac Blueberry Blonde Ale
