I had a great day planned out for today: get the family up early, head out for a hike at the wildlife sanctuary, then spend a few hours at Nauset Beach. Unfortunately, the Weather Channel had totally blown the forecast, so I woke up to find rain and dreary skies, not the 77 and sunny I had been told to expect. The hike didn’t happen. We grabbed breakfast at a bagel shop and ate it in the car at a scenic overlook instead. The beach? Not today. We headed up to Provincetown to do a little shopping instead, and had lunch at a burrito counter. I would eat at Big Daddy’s frequently the two summers I lived in P-Town while working on the Whale Watching boats, and it was fun to share it with my kids.
By mid-afternoon the rain stopped, though it was still cool and cloudy, so we headed out on our bikes to explore the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We rode south from where we are staying and stopped off in Orleans center for a snack, then continued another few miles to Nickerson State Park. By then Thing 2, who is not really used to biking such distances, was feeling achey, so we turned the bikes around and headed back north. In total we biked about 9 miles, though the pace was so easy that I’m not sure it counts as much of a workout.
We ended the day with a short trip out to First Encounter Beach, as the sun broke through the clouds just before setting. The Hub and the Things played a little wiffle ball while I went for a walk along the dunes looking for birds. I spotted some cool little semi-palmated plovers, a spotted sandpiper, a northern harrier, ring-billed, laughing, and greater black backed gulls, and a pair of love birds acting out part of the Pina Colada Song in a spot that was not nearly as secluded as they may have thought. This marked the first time I was glad that the kids did not want to go birding with me.

- Small dish (less than 1/4 cup) of mint chocolate chip ice cream
