Ship’s Log–April 1st

I had a bout of insomnia last night, which is a rare occurrence for me. My brain woke up at 11 and decided that to panic that I hadn’t done my taxes yet. Never mind that I had set aside this coming Friday to do them, I wasn’t going to be allowed to sleep with the taxes unresolved. I gave in, got up, and spent the next hour and a half preparing the first draft of my filing. It took another hour or so to even come close to falling into a fitful and unfulfilling sleep.

So today was uncomfortable, to say the least. As I am prone to do when I’ve had too little sleep, I drank a lot of coffee and ate too much crap…girl scout cookies in this instance, since I still have several boxes in the house. By the time I limped into my evening class, I was so tired and drained that I was useless. I left class wondering why I even bother coming at all, since I’m apparently so easily dominated by my partners (all of whom probably slept last night).

Fortunately I had the foresight to put a dinner in the Crock Pot early in the day, while I was still vaguely human, so when I slunk home after class, defeated and exhausted, there was a healthy meal waiting rather than just the menu for the local pizza joint.

Fitness:

  • Morning: easy 1 mile stroll in the woods
  • Evening: 1 hour BJJ with vigorous rolling

Breakfast:

  • Whole wheat pancakes with strawberries, soy yogurt, walnuts, and maple syrup
  • Coffee with soy creamer

Lunch:

  • Leftover barley chickpea risotto
  • Salad: red leaf lettuce, romaine, kale, red pepper, and cucumber with balsamic vinegar
  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with soy milk
  • Tagalong cookies

Afternoon Snack:

  • Small bowl of mesa sunrise cereal with blueberries and almond milk
  • Coffee with soy creamer
  • More cookies
  • Pre-class: banana

Dinner:

  • Tempeh and kidney bean open-faced sloppy joes. This recipe, with a package of tempeh crumbled in before cooking.
  • Cole slaw
  • Vegan white Russian (almond milk and Kahlua). I wanted to make sure I slept hard.
  • More cookies
