Ship’s Log–April 13th

IMG_4001 Day one of our Spring Break Road Trip. We rose early, ate an uninspired breakfast, and hit the road. Today’ travel took 7 1/2 hours and ended only when we rolled into the beautiful Lexington, Virginia. The Hub had matriculated at Washington and Lee University here in Lexington, so it seemed like a nice spot to stop for the night. The town is gorgeous. If you’ve seen the movie Sommersby, you’ve seen Lexington. Much of it was filmed here, and there are still bits and pieces of set dressing from the movie to be seen around Main Street. I felt wonderful after so many ours sitting to get out and stretch our legs with a  2 hour stroll around the town and the campus. The Hub had arranged to meet two of his favorite professors for dinner in town. They chose the restaurant at the Sheridan Livery Inn, right on Main Street. Since we’re traveling, I am in rule-breaking mode and looking to try local goods. The Cru and Soda caught my eye, and I’m glad I took a chance on this locally made fortified wine aperitif. So refreshing and light, it was just perfect after the sweaty stroll through the hot summer spring. After walking around town, we had a little family conference to discuss tomorrow’s family run. We agreed unanimously that running here was not something anyone would enjoy. The hills are steeper than what we’re used to. The paved surfaces are very uneven, though they are probably better than the brick sidewalks. We decided to skip tomorrow’s run and instead head out early to our next stop in Tennessee, in the hopes that we’ll be able to get in a good hike or some horseback riding before the sun sets tomorrow. Fitness:

  • A good, long walk around Lexington, Virginia, which is good and hilly

  • Blueberry muffin with peanut butter
  • Coffee with soy milk

On the Road:

  • Cold brewed New Orleans style coffee with soy milk
  • Potato chips

Lunch, Somewhere in Maryland:

  • Falafel sandwich. I ate the falafel and veggies, but took a pass on the bread, which had all the flavor of styrofoam
  • French fries
  • Iced tea
  • “Iced” coffee from a Starbucks where the barista clearly didn’t understand the concept of an iced coffee, and instead gave us luke warm coffee which I begrudgingly sipped through a straw for the last two hours of our drive

Dinner @ the Sheridan Livery Inn:

  • Cru and soda. This was a fortified Virginian wine with a splash of soda that is my new favorite thing
  • Salad with honey raspberry vinaigrette
  • Handmade sweet potato and marscapone ravioli in brown butter sauce with greens and hazelnuts. Not vegan, but well worth the cheat

After Dinner:

  • Small dish of local salt peanut gelato.
  • 1/2 vegan chocolate chip cookie
