Ship’s Log–April 26th


This morning I spent a little time participating in a half marathon from the volunteer side. Thing 1’s girl scout troop had volunteered to work a water station for a race held by a local running club. I brought Thing 1 to the station at 8 am, and we all worked for nearly an hour lining up 1,500 or so cups of water and Gatorade. I left for my morning MMA class before the first of the runners arrived, and they had all passed through by the time I returned an hour later.

I was sad to have missed out on cheering the runners, but it was a good reason…there were two of my fellow students testing for their next belts in class. Helping others test is always fun, and today it was especially so because there was someone testing for a higher rank belt which involved full contact sparring.

I got to go three rounds sparring with the boys, including one who, if I’m being honest, scares me silly. His knees and kicks could shatter bone. This is the first time I’ve sparred with him, and I decided that in order to ensure my own safety, I had to change my approach. I’m usually a bit of a wimp, and I hang back, letting my partner throw the first few rounds of attacks to tire himself out. That wasn’t going to work here, so instead I just came at him like a rabid dog, getting in close early on and never letting him get enough distance between us to delay those scary kicks.

Of course, I probably didn’t need to do that. He did throw a few knees, but he was gentleman enough to adjust his intensity so that they didn’t cause injury. It was still good to try a whole different approach and see that I’m capable of being extremely aggressive if the occasion calls for it.


  • 45 minutes MMA class


  • Whole wheat everything bagel with tofutti cream cheese and peanut butter
  • Coffee with vanilla stevia and almond milk

Morning Snack:

  • Hard boiled egg. The last one from Easter

Lunch @ Whole Foods:

  • Salad: Romaine, kale, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, grape tomatoes, cucumber, mushrooms and mandarin oranges with sesame ginger dressing
  • Peanut noodles with soy nuggets
  • Moroccan mint iced tea

Afternoon Snack:

  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with soy milk


  • Tofu hot dogs on whole wheat buns
  • Cole slaw
  • Cherries
  • Long Trail Ale

Movie Night:

  • Junior mints
