Ship’s Log–May 10th & 11th


So, I have a pretty cool announcement. Saturday The Hub and I (along with some of our training partners) took a seminar with Coach Kevin Kearns, at the end of which we were certified as Level 1 & 2 MMA Fitness Trainers! The seminar was an amazing experience, and I learned a whole bunch of great ways to build fitness. My goal is to start running MMA strength and conditioning classes for women soon, though I’m going to start with Thing 1 and myself just as soon as her track seasons ends next week.

Because the seminar was such an intense hands-on day, I decided to put off my usual Sunday long run. Aside from the fact that my legs were in a fair amount of pain when I woke up, I was pretty sure that Saturday’s effort would have left me without the proper reserves to fuel a 9 mile run. Instead my wonderful kids joined me on a long walk in the woods to spot the birds migrating through our area, which was really wonderful.



  • Burn with Kearns training seminar, which included about 4 hours of intense exercise


  • Whole wheat everything bagel with peanut butter
  • Small dish of blueberries and strawberries
  • Coffee with vanilla stevia and almond milk


  • Tempeh avocado wrap
  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with soy milk
  • Pico de Gallo chips
  • 1/2 vegan chocolate chip cookie

Afternoon Snack:

  • Vega Sport Protein Bar


  • 3 slices vegan whole wheat veggie pizza
  • Glass of red wine
  • Handful of NatureBox Citrus Chiptole Chickpeas



  • 2 hour birding walk with my family


  • HUGE piece of homemade whole wheat blueberry coffee cake made just for me by Thing 1
  • Coffee with vanilla stevia and soy milk

Morning Snack:

  • Cold brew New Orleans style coffee with soy milk

Lunch @ Pop’s Garage:

  • Chips with salsa and guac
  • 2 veggie tacos


  • Whole wheat fettuccine with vegan alfredo sauce
  • Mixed greens with tangerine balsamic
  • My father’s homemade Chardonnay
  • 1 1/2 cupcakes
