Ship’s Log–July 21st

PicShells

I looked through my workout log, and it had been two weeks since I took a rest day…ooops. Today I rested, limiting my activity to a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk through Ocean Grove and Bradley Beach.

This was a good opportunity to sit back and review my training for the last few weeks. I have been in one of those periods where I feel like I’m making no progress. My running times are getting a little worse. I’m getting tired faster. I’ve put on a bit of weight again. Overall, I’m feeling a bit defeated and discouraged. Going two weeks without a break probably didn’t help, since a lack of proper rest will lead to a decline in performance. The parade of treat-eating is also not helpful…there’s always a reason for cake or ice cream in the summer. I keep saying I’ll stop it, but then when someone else offers me a sweet treat I am powerless to resist. I did pretty well today, though.

Speaking of summer…the heat and humidity is probably the single biggest factor in my slower running pace the last two weeks. It is not possible to maintain the same intensity of work when the body can’t cool down as easily. I will try to remind myself of that as I continue to struggle through my runs this week.
