I really wish I could report that this weekend I finally beat my 2 hour goal, but, alas, it did not happen.
It wasn’t that I didn’t run hard. I started hard, perhaps too hard, and things fell apart after mile 9. I got a stitch in my side. I ran to the point where I started to get tunnel vision. I barely limped across the finish line with a final time of 2:03:26 with my heart broken.
I think a few things lead to the failure to meet my goal:
- My food during training has been sporadic, with far too much cheating. This extended to even the day before the race, with a donut in the afternoon, french fries with dinner, and candy back at the hotel.
- My weight is not ideal. I have been trying and failing to shed the extra pounds I’m carrying on these runs with me.
- The weather was not ideal. While it wasn’t too hot, it was humid. Miserably humid. The sweat was dripping off me by mile 2, and I just could not cool down.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do from here; if I’ll focus on a spring race next or be fully reckless and try again at a local race in two weeks. A lot depends on how my recovery goes over the next few days and the weather forecast for the October 5th race. Right now I’m in a lot of pain, but that may resolve in a day or two. I hope.
