Ship’s Log–September 22nd


There was a lot of pain going on in my legs today. My right thigh feels like I was hit with an iron bar. The hamstrings on both sides whine when I walk. Walking down stairs makes me moan. This is what the day after going all out on a race feels like. I can only imagine how miserable Thing 2 was during her cross country practice today. They only ran 2 miles, but I don’t think I could have managed 2 blocks.

I tried to eat a lot of anti-inflammatory foods today. This worked well through the afternoon, but my working dinner this evening proved harder to manage. The office I was visiting provided me a salad, but they had failed to notice the whopping load of bacon on top. I scraped off what I could and then made the difficult decision to eat the cheese, without which there would have been nothing other than lettuce and dressing. I took out my frustrations on three bakery cookies, which were also not part of the plan. Eating clean in a dirty world is hard.

Distance to goal weight: 21.5 pounds. My legs are so swollen


  • 2 mile walk in the park
  • 10 minutes of really gentle yoga


  • Steel cut oatmeal with applesauce, blueberries, bananas, flax seed, vanilla coconut milk yogurt, and maple syrup
  • Coffee with vanilla stevia and almond milk

Morning Snack:

  • Iced green tea with peppermint and ginger


  • Mixed greens with avocado, cucumber and tomato dressed with miso, sriracha, and blackberry ginger balsamic
  • Tempeh and shiitake cooked in teriyaki sauce
  • Coffee with stevia and almond milk
  • Dark chocolate with almonds

Afternoon Snack:

  • Apple with peanut butter
  • A few chocolate covered mini pretzels


  • Salad at a work meeting: romaine, parmesan, raw mushrooms, unknown dressing, and hopefully all the bacon removed
  • Three cookies (making up for the fact that the salad hadn’t been filling at all

Late Night:

  • Harvest Ale
  • Wasa crackers with cashew cheese and green olives
  • A handful of granola with chocolate chips
