Ship’s Log–September 26th

Thing 1’s cross country team met for practice this morning at the county park which hosts their home meets. I brought Thing 2 there so he and I could do a training run on the official course. The coach warned me that it was a difficult course, perhaps the most challenging one in the county.

Oh. My. God. He was right.

It starts off with a slight uphill run across a deer-poop-filled grassy meadow for a hundred meters or so, and then it’s into the woods…where you hit a part that they call the Roller Coaster because it’s all up and down and up and down for maybe half a mile. Then there’s a bit of flat area, which is a nice break before you hit The Bowl. This feature is a steep decline down, and sharp curve around the bottom, and then a terrible, horrible, no-good climb back out.

Thing 2 and I needed a short walking break after our running climb out of the bowl so that we wouldn’t barf.

After the bowl, there’s another easy, flat bit around some tennis courts, and then it’s back into the woods. They call this part the Back Trail, but I think the Labyrinth is more appropriate. Thing 1 had gotten lost here during her first meet, taking a wrong turn at an unmarked fork in the trail that added a few minutes to her finish time. Thing 2 and I made some lucky guesses and wound up coming out into the open meadow where the course finishes without having to backtrack at all.

This was my first real experience trail running (vs. the paved surface I usually run on) and by far the most challenging hills I’ve trained on. I think I’m going to try hitting this course at least twice a month, since, as Thing 1’s coach advised me, training to run this course fast will make any other course simple.

Distance to goal weight: 20.4 pounds

Fitness:

  • 3 mile hill run
  • 45 minute demo team practice

Breakfast:

  • Steel cut oatmeal with applesauce, blueberries, bananas, flax seed, plain soy yogurt, and maple syrup
  • Coffee with vanilla stevia

Lunch @ Chipotle:

  • Soft corn tacos with sofritas (tofu), salsa and lettuce
  • 1/2 bag of chips with salsa and guacamole
  • Iced tea

Afternoon Snack:

  • Coffee with sugar and almond milk
  • Sprinkle covered donut

Dinner:

  • Seitan quesadilla with salsa
  • Moroccan mint tea
  • Assorted chips
