Ship’s Log–September 30th

Thing 2 has been struggling with his motivation for cross country. I watched his meet last week, and his performance did not resemble the kid I’ve run with. Turns out there are some boys on his team that he doesn’t like to be around, and it is effecting his attitude and performance.

Today his team had an away meet, and he had not qualified to be part of the travel team. Rather than letting him spend the afternoon plugged into his computer, I took him out on a run when he got home from school. We decided to fun fartleks, which involves alternating between intense and light running based on feel rather than distance or time. When we went hard, I couldn’t keep up with him. The kid is fast…when he wants to be. He just doesn’t want to be when he’s with his team

I don’t know how to fix this. Ugh.

Distance to goal weight: 20.7 pounds

Fitness:

  • 2.5 miles of fartleks (alternating running intensity)

Breakfast:

  • Sprouted grain cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter
  • Red grapes
  • Coffee with sugar and almond milk

Lunch:

  • Tempeh and mushrooms with Korean BBQ Sauce
  • Mixed greens with cucumber, carrots, and red onion with Sesame ginger dressing
  • Coffee with sugar and alone milk
  • Praline pumpkin seeds

Afternoon Snack:

  • Rice cakes with hummus and pesto
  • Sea salt sun-crunch

Dinner:

  • Black bean chili
  • Corn tortillas

Late Night:

  • Blueberry flax KIND bar
  • Glass of white sangria
  • Handful of praline pumpkin seeds
