Ship’s Log–October 6th

I woke up this morning feeling like crap. My head aches, I’m coughing a bit, and my throat is so sore that it hurts when I swallow. This stinks. By the end of the day I was a bit desperate for relief from the pain in my throat and decided to give gargling beer a try. IT WORKED!

I’m going to spend the next few days doing a mild detox and cleaning up my diet a smudge, partly to help kick this thing out, but also because it’s time to drop my calories down now that I’m doing those long runs for an upcoming race. For a start, the protein powders are going away. They are extra calories that I don’t need in the off season, and anyway, I can’t find one I like that isn’t laced with stevia. I’m also going to cancel our Naturebox subscription. The snacks are good, but we would eat the whole month’s worth of snacks in a week to 10 days, probably because we were competing to get our fair share. This does not fit with any of our fitness goals. This week I purchased a few different snacks at the store to see if we will behave better when the snacks don’t feel like they’ll become scarce after a few days. I’m also going to make sure that I get daily servings of greens, fruit, and beans (even if it’s just hummus), and try to cut down, but not eliminate, the bread products.

Distance to goal weight: 21.9 pounds

Fitness:

  • 45 minute no-gi bjj. I went to class hoping that if I moved around a bit I would feel better, which often works. Not tonight. I felt like lead.

Breakfast:

  • Whole grain waffles with peanut butter, banana, and maple syrup
  • Smoothie: strawberries, red grapes, banana, apple, kale, lettuce, flax seed, soy milk, and ice cubes
  • Coffee with sugar and almond milk

Morning Snack:

  • Hot peppermint tea
  • Slice of walnut cranberry sourdough bread that my father had insisted I try. It was pretty damn good.

Lunch:

  • Tempeh and mushrooms cooked in coconut oil, soy sauce, and chili paste
  • Lettuce, cucumber, red onion, carrots, and grape tomato dressed in blackberry ginger balsamic, miso, and sriracha
  • Coffee with sugar and almond milk
  • Pumpkin spice fig bar
  • Small square of dark chocolate

Afternoon Snack:

  • Rice cakes with hummus
  • Cajun snack mix
  • Another square of chocolate

Dinner:

  • Wegmans brand Don’t Have a Cow garden burger on whole grain bun with Daiya, mustard, ketchup, spicy pickles, tomato, and lettuce
  • Red grapes
  • New Castle Werewolf red ale
