Ship’s Log–January 7th, 2015


I really wanted to run today. I had it all planned out. I would do somewhere between 2 and 3 miles then head home for a little light strength training.

It wasn’t the blistering cold that kept me indoors, or the high wind with its terrible wind chill factor. It was the guarantee of ice on my running trails. Yesterday’s snowfall was little more than a dusting, but it came down on already damp surfaces. The temperature dropped quickly, seizing that snow to a thin layer of ice. The trails, like the sidewalks and roads near my home, are untreated, so there must be hidden ice slicks just under the thin layer of pretty snow.

The risk to my wellbeing is too great just to hit an arbitrary mileage goal. Besides, the temperature is supposed to go above freezing Friday, which may give me the chance to sneak some miles in more safely. Maybe even the 5 miles I’ll need to hit my 12 mile goal.

Distance to goal weight: 22.4


  • 10 push ups, sit ups, and squats
  • 20 minutes strength training. Nothing too intense, just some quality time with the kettle bells.


  • Crock pot steel cut oats with cinnamon, vanilla soy milk, 1/2 banana, spiced pecans, and a little coconut syrup
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk

Morning Snack:

  • Peppermint green tea


  • 2 egg omelette with roasted red pepper and portabella mushrooms topped with a little sriracha
  • Kale salad
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk


  • Red lentil sweet potato coconut curry soup with spinach
  • 1 slice whole grain bread
  • Chocolate mint tea

Late Night:

  • Guinness Blond Lager
  • Pistachios
  • Dark chocolate truffle (this is a slip, I know. I shouldn’t have had the treat)
