Ship’s Log–January 14th

I tried to give myself the day off. I can’t breath through my nose, I’m coughing a fair bit (horrible post nasal drip), and I’m achy. No fever, though, so there’s still hope that this is a nasty, nasty little cold and not the dread flu. However, parents can’t ever really take the day off. I had to get into real clothes (fare thee well, fuzzy jammies) to take Thing 1 to visit the Doctor.

She had hit her head snowboarding over the weekend. Twice, as it turns out. Since then, she has complained of a headache to anyone who would listen (never you mind that she had a headache BEFORE the ski trip, though she said it was now worse). She complained of this headache at school, including the words “I hit my head skiing this weekend” and leaving out words like “wearing a helmet” and “have had the headache for three weeks, really,” necessitating a trip to the doctor to be assessed for a concussion before she would be allowed to participate in her winter track training. Anyone wondering if I’m some sort of shitty parent can stuff it, because she doesn’t have a concussion, just a stiff neck which was chasing tension headaches. A quick trip to the chiropractor set her neck right and the headache began to immediately dissipate.

Too bad their crickedy-crackle mojo doesn’t work on viruses.

Ohhhhh….almost forgot to share…in the continuing vein of “Why Would You Run If There Might Be Ice?” the local high school winter track team (sans the head injury victims, I presume) made their distance runners train outside yesterday. I guess no one walked the track to check for ice first, resulting in one lovely young lady spending the evening getting the bridge of her nose stitched up. Ice + Running = Ouch

Distance to goal weight: 22.9 pounds

Fitness:

  • Ha ha ha No.

Breakfast:

  • No one wanted to eat food I had prepared, so The Hub ran out to the bagel shop. I had a whole wheat everything with peanut butter and a little tofu cream cheese
  • Glass of orange juice
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk

Morning Snack:

  • Tea with honey and lemon
  • Mug full of miso broth with toasted seaweed. I’m really craving salt.
  • More tea

Lunch:

  • Vegan mini egg rolls with chili sauce
  • Kale salad
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk

Afternoon Snack:

  • Another day of grazing, but much less so. I tried something chocolate, and didn’t like it (I hope I’m not dying), so I settled for a few cashews a few times.
  • Teas of various sorts, but mostly peppermint

Dinner:

  • Whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce and vegan pork crumbles
  • Mixed greens with balsamic vinegar and olive oil
  • Dessert was a bag of potato chips. I seriously cannot get enough salty foods right now, and I’m not going to fight it hard. If I’m craving it this badly, there must be a reason.
