Ship’s Log–January 16th


Well, I managed a run today, if you can call it that. The temperature hit nearly 40 today with clear skies, so I figured I would give it a try. First I bundled up in my full winter gear, dressing like it was 15 degrees colder out than it was. I urged myself to take it slowly, too, focusing on not overdoing it. Around the 1.5 mile mark, there was a popping sensation in my head, and my sinuses suddenly and dramatically drained (adrenaline, I’ve heard, is a potent decongestant), making my outward appearance match the snot-nosed little brat that I am at heart.

I hope that in another day or two I’ll even feel well enough to have my willpower stores recharged, and I can get back to the work of reducing the amount of me in the world.

Distance to goal weight: 23.9 pounds


  • 10 push ups, sit ups, and squats
  • 5k slow run. More of a jog, if I’m being honest.


  • Whole grain English muffin with Daiya cheddar, vegan Canadian bacon, and 1 scrambled egg
  • Whole fruit juice: banana, pineapple, blackberry, orange, frozen blueberries, kale, flax and chia seed, and water
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk

Morning Snack:

  • Black tea with honey and lemon


  • Unchicken noodle soup with miso
  • Whole grain wrap with hummus, tomato, and mixed greens
  • Coffee with vanilla soy milk
  • Dark chocolate with toffee bits

Afternoon Snack:

  • Apple with toffee pecan honey butter
  • Cashews


  • Seitan steak with HP steak sauce
  • Potatoes roasted with everything bagel seasoning
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Sam Adams Boston Lager
  • More chocolate
