Ship’s Log–February 1st, 2015

PicShells

Tomorrow is my birthday, and since it falls on a school day, The Things decided to celebrate it today. I woke at 6 am to the smell of cooking bread stuffs. Thing 1 made me pancakes while Thing 2 made cinnamon twists out of canned biscuit dough. Clearly they could not reach an accord regarding what breakfast to make me, so they each made their own…which means I ate two breakfasts in one sitting!

After two breakfasts, we packed all our camera gear up in the car and headed down to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway Township, NJ to do a little bird watching. The birding was not spectacular (this is the slow time of year for the refuge, it turns out), but I was able to play around with my new big ass lens and got a few shots like this one of a northern harrier hunting in the marsh:

After a few hours of birding, we looked around for a place to grab lunch and discovered that we were in something of a food desert. There was food, but none of it even remotely healthy. We settled for remade sandwiches at a Starbucks, which had the benefit of not being platters of fried food or slices of questionable pizza.

This evening we had a quiet little gathering (us and my parents) to watch the Superbowl, eat standard stupid football snack foods, and celebrate me aging with a donut. There had been a discussion about getting a cake from a local gourmet bakery, but I ultimately decided that it was not wise to get a cake that served 16 for a party of 6. That would lead to cake today, cake tomorrow, and cake the next day. The donut did not burdened me with leftovers, just a one time shot of sugar and guilt.
